VGW, operator of Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker, announced it would phase out Sweeps Coins offerings in New York amid regulatory uncertainty. The company cited pending legislation and increased regulatory scrutiny from the state Attorney General. The exit followed a staggered timeline: players could no longer acquire Sweeps Coins after June 2, existing Sweeps Coins could be used until July 2, and redemptions were accepted until August 1. The shutdown did not affect VGW's social gaming using Gold Coins only.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James sent cease-and-desist orders to 26 online gaming platforms deemed to be offering sweepstakes gambling. The office argued that these platforms violated New York gambling laws despite their sweepstakes structure. Many operators withdrew from the state before formal legislation was enacted.

Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senate Bill 5935A into law, officially banning sweepstakes casinos in New York. The ban came after most operators had already exited the state following Attorney General Letitia James's enforcement actions earlier in the year. The legislation codified the regulatory position that sweepstakes casinos constitute illegal gambling under New York law. New York joined California, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Montana in enacting comprehensive bans on the sweepstakes casino model.
