Key regulatory developments, market changes, and enforcement actions affecting sweepstakes casinos in Washington from 2020 to 2026.
January 1, 2020
Washington state law prohibits all activities where players place something of value on the outcome of an event and expect a prize in return. Washington authorities classify prize-redeemable sweepstakes as gambling outright, making it one of only two states (along with Idaho) that completely outlaws sweepstakes casinos. Unlike Idaho, which permits entertainment-only play, Washington bans sweepstakes casino operations entirely. All major operators have ceased operations in Washington to comply with state law.
